The Government's targets for increasing cycle usage are ambitious, and the provision of appropriate cycle parking facilities will play a crucial role in ensuring that these targets are met. Research clearly shows that one of the key factors which encourage additional cycle trips to be made is the provision of correctly located, well-designed, secure cycle parking close to the cyclist's intended destination.

The Bike Parking and Security Association has brought together cycle parking manufacturers, local authorities, consultants and cycling interest groups in a discussion forum which has concentrated on this important element in the cycle usage equation.

The aim of the BPSA Quality Cycle Parking Standard is to set a realistic standard for secure and convenient cycle parking in the public domain, ie: cycle parking to which the general public has open access. This would include general town centre cycle parking, cycle parking provided at public and leisure facilities, and cycle parking provided at transport facilities and interchanges.
